My ‘SilverWeek’ in Malaga with SilverSpain

An email popped up in my inbox a few weeks ago inviting me to sample a new innovative break for the over 50’s in Southern Spain. I gave it a moments consideration, and then gratefully accepted.

Last Monday I set off from Gatwick and landed in Malaga to blue skies and the warm Mediterranean sun. I was to be part of a group of travel writers taking part in activities relating to lifestyle, health, diet and relationships. Our hosts are a new company called ‘SilverSpain’ and all the workshops and activities planned certainly sound interesting. The staff organising these ‘SilverWeeks’ have obviously worked tirelessly over the past months to put together a selection of quality hotels, restaurants and excursions within the greater Malaga area. I am instantly impressed by their dedication and attention to detail. The aim is to provide a holiday in the sun which will refresh and educate, and to show the visitor another side of the Costa del Sol.

In due course, I shall write a full feature for www.silvertraveladvisor.com but here is a snapshot of my memorable impressions.

Our hotel for the first two nights was the very stylish Hydros Boutique Hotel overlooking the sea in Benalmedena. All rooms have a private Jacuzzi tub on the terrace, which is a real bonus.

The first activity was a nature walk through the Guadalhorce reserve.  This is a hidden gem within sight of the hustle and bustle of Malaga city and a great place to birdwatch, especially in the early morning or evening.  A relaxing evening meal back in Benalmedena Port gave us the chance to get to know each other, plenty of wine and some beautifully prepared food always does the trick!

The next morning, we were up at 8am and took part in an early morning exercise class with our personal trainer for the duration, Leo. The setting was amazing, we all had yoga mats on the hotel terrace looking directly over the sea towards the rising sun. Leo worked us hard and so the refreshing ‘smoothie’ at the end was very welcome. As part of the healthy lifestyle, SilverSpain promote diet and nutrition and the smoothie was a nutritious and healthy start to our day.

A visit to the beautiful Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Natural Park provided the chance to take a peaceful stroll through the pine trees and we spotted several birds along the way. After lunch, we called into the world-famous Shanti Som Wellbeing Retreat, THE place to come and unwind and shake off the stress of modern life. Tucked away in an idyllic setting this is a very special place that instantly calms and revitalises. We took part in a Mindfulness session and all left feeling chilled and focussed.

After two nights at the Hydros Hotel we moved inland towards Ronda and called in to the Joaquin Fernandez Bodega, a family run vineyard. We had a lesson in the art of preparing paella and enjoyed some quality wine tasting.

Our hotel for the next couple of nights was a real gem, La Vinuela Boutique Hotel in the heart of the Axarquia area. Built along traditional Spanish lines this is a place I would love to come back to someday. Quiet, relaxing and well placed for plenty of interesting walks.

The following day we travelled to Cartama and called into Hacienda La Esperanza, a stunning country house where the owners breed and train pure Spanish bred horses. We were honoured to be given a look round at the stables and to meet the horses, followed by a breath-taking show of horsemanship, interspersed with some beautiful flamenco dancing.

After a lunch break at a local ‘chiringuito’ on the beach in Malaga, we donned our swimmers and headed into the Hamman Al Andalus for an afternoon of baths and massage. Sometimes my job is so very hard….

Alongside all these experiences were delicious meals at specially chosen restaurants and bars throughout the area and we tasted the best tapas, as well as local dishes, and of course, lots of fresh seafood, all enjoyed with Spanish wines.

SilverSpain have put together four different ‘Silver Weeks’ for the UK market based around ‘Healthy Eating’, ‘Healthy Mind’ Heathy Body and ‘Healthy Relationships’.

I shall be reviewing these programmes in future blogs and you can find more information at
